Vehicle Fitment
This engine is a direct long-block replacement for the following North American models:
Toyota Camry (CE, LE, XLE): 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 (2.2L Models)
Compatibility Note: This is the 2.2L 5S-FE. It is not a replacement for the 3.0L 1MZ-FE V6 models.
JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide
To ensure 100% compatibility and maintain your Camry’s emissions and drivability, professional Toyota technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:
Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold and Exhaust Manifold. JDM versions may have different vacuum port configurations and lack specific EGR ports or oxygen sensor bungs required for North American OBDII emissions compliance.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive and will not interface with your Camry’s chassis bulkheads or fuse box.
Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors. Toyota electronics are highly sensitive; using your original “known-good” sensors prevents intermittent signal issues or CEL codes.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan. Depending on the donor vehicle (e.g., Mark II or Scepter), you must transfer your original USDM Camry Oil Pan and Pickup Tube to ensure proper subframe and crossmember clearance.
Distributor vs. Coil Pack: If your USDM Camry is a 1997–1999 (Distributor) or 2000–2001 (Coil Pack/Waste Spark), ensure you transfer your specific ignition components to the JDM block.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
