Vehicle Fitment
This engine is a direct long-block replacement for the following North American models:
Subaru Outback (2.5i, Premium, Limited): 2010, 2011, 2012
Subaru Legacy (2.5i): 2010, 2011, 2012
Compatibility Note: This is the EJ25 AVLS variant. It is a direct mechanical replacement for the USDM EJ253. It is not compatible with Turbocharged (EJ255) or DOHC models.
JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide
To ensure 100% compatibility and prevent a Check Engine Light (CEL) using your original ECU, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:
Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold and Exhaust Manifold. JDM versions may have different vacuum routing and often lack specific emissions sensors required for North American OBDII compliance.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive and will not interface with your Outback’s chassis bulkhead.
Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors. These are “known-good” for your vehicle’s electrical system.
EGR System: Check the driver-side cylinder head. If your original USDM engine uses an EGR system and the JDM unit lacks the threaded port, you must utilize the USDM head or an adapter strategy to maintain emissions compliance.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan; if the donor vehicle was a different chassis (like a Forester or Exiga), swap your original USDM Oil Pan and Pickup to ensure proper subframe clearance.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
