Vehicle Fitment
This engine is the top-rated replacement engine for the following North American models:
Subaru Impreza 2.5RS / 2.5TS: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005
Subaru Impreza Outback Sport: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005
Chassis Compatibility: GD (Sedan) and GG (Wagon) chassis.
Compatibility Note: This engine replaces the 2.5L SOHC. It is not a replacement for the 2.0L Turbo WRX (EJ205).
JDM 2.0L to USDM 2.5L Swap Guide
To ensure 100% compatibility and prevent a Check Engine Light (CEL), you must perform the following “External Component Swap” using parts from your original 2.5L engine:
Intake Manifold: Transfer your original USDM 2.5L Intake Manifold onto the JDM 2.0L block. This ensures all vacuum lines, sensors, and your wiring harness plug in perfectly.
Crankshaft & Camshaft Sprockets: You must swap your original USDM Crankshaft Sprocket and Driver-Side Camshaft Sprocket. The JDM timing teeth are different; if you do not swap these, the car will not start because the ECU cannot read the timing signals.
Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM PCV Valve, Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors.
Flexplate/Flywheel: Use your original USDM Flexplate (Automatic) or Flywheel (Manual) to ensure the starter and transmission engage correctly.
Exhaust Manifolds: Swap your original USDM Exhaust Manifolds. JDM headers often lack the secondary O2 sensor bungs required for North American emissions.
ECU Note: Your original USDM 2.5L ECU will run this 2.0L engine perfectly. No tuning or ECU flashing is required for daily driving.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
