JDM to USDM Installation & Technical Guide
To ensure 100% OBDII compliance and a seamless swap, professional Honda technicians recommend these “External Component” steps:
Solenoid & Sensor Transfer: You must transfer your original USDM Shift Solenoids and Transmission Sensors to the JDM unit. JDM electrical plugs can vary by year and region; using your original electronics ensures the ECU recognizes the components instantly and prevents “Check Engine” lights or shift codes.
External Oil Cooler/Filter: The 8th-Gen Civic features an external inline transmission filter located on top of the transmission. It is mandatory to replace this filter and flush the cooler lines during installation to prevent old debris from contaminating your JDM replacement.
Neutral Safety Switch: Reuse your original USDM Neutral Safety Switch (Range Sensor). This ensures your dashboard gear indicator and starting circuit function correctly.
Fluid Requirements: Use only high-quality Honda Genuine ATF DW-1. Do not use older Z1 fluid or generic multi-vehicle fluids, as the R18A transmission is highly sensitive to fluid friction modifiers.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
