JDM to USDM Installation Notes

Important Swap Information

This JDM 2AZ-FE engine is commonly used as a replacement for USDM Toyota Highlander 2.4L applications. While the long block remains fundamentally the same, some external accessories, sensors, and emissions equipment may differ between JDM and USDM models.

For the most seamless installation, transfer the following components from your original engine:

  • Intake manifold
  • Exhaust manifold
  • Throttle body
  • Fuel injectors and fuel rail
  • Engine wiring harness
  • Engine mount brackets
  • Alternator and power steering accessories
  • EGR components (if equipped)
  • Sensors and switches
  • Water outlet housing and coolant fittings

ECU & Wiring Compatibility

  • Retain the original USDM ECU for proper operation.
  • Reuse the original factory engine harness.
  • No ECU reprogramming is typically required when replacing a USDM 2AZ-FE with a JDM 2AZ-FE.
  • Verify all electrical connectors and sensors during installation.

Emissions Compliance

  • JDM engines may have different emissions configurations than USDM vehicles.
  • Transfer all original emissions equipment to maintain compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • California and CARB-regulated vehicles may require additional emissions verification.

Recommended Service Before Installation

To maximize reliability and reduce future labor costs, it is recommended to replace:

  • Valve cover gasket
  • Front crankshaft seal
  • Rear main seal
  • Water pump
  • Thermostat
  • Spark plugs
  • Serpentine belt
  • Coolant hoses
  • Timing chain tensioner (if necessary)

What is included

You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.

Before you order

  • Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
  • Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
  • Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
  • Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
