JDM to USDM Installation Notes

Important Swap Information

This JDM 2AZ-FE engine is commonly installed into USDM Scion xB vehicles as a direct replacement long block. While the core engine architecture remains the same, some external components and emissions systems may differ between JDM and USDM applications.

For proper installation, transfer the following original USDM components when necessary:

  • Intake manifold assembly
  • Exhaust manifold
  • Throttle body
  • Fuel rail and injectors
  • Engine wiring harness
  • Ignition coils
  • Engine mount brackets
  • Water outlet housing
  • Sensors and switches
  • EVAP and emissions-related equipment

ECU & Wiring Compatibility

  • Retain the original USDM Scion xB ECU.
  • Reuse the factory engine wiring harness.
  • No tuning is generally required when replacing a USDM 2AZ-FE with a JDM 2AZ-FE engine.
  • Verify sensor connectors and emissions equipment compatibility before installation.

Emissions Compliance

  • JDM engines may have different emissions configurations than USDM models.
  • Transfer all emissions-related components from the original engine.
  • Compliance requirements vary by state and local regulations.
  • California emissions-controlled vehicles may require additional verification.

Recommended Maintenance Before Installation

To ensure long-term reliability and reduce labor costs, it is recommended to replace:

  • Valve cover gasket
  • Front and rear main seals
  • Water pump
  • Thermostat
  • Spark plugs
  • Accessory drive belt
  • Coolant hoses
  • Timing chain tensioner and guides (if required)

What is included

You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.

Before you order

  • Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
  • Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
  • Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
  • Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
