Vehicle Fitment
This engine is a direct long-block replacement for the following North American models:
Mazda 3 (i, S, Touring, Grand Touring): 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Mazda 5: 2006–2010 (2.3L Models)
Mazda 6: 2003–2008 (2.3L Models – Verify Sensor Ports)
Compatibility Note: This is the Naturally Aspirated L3-VE. It is not compatible with the Turbocharged Mazdaspeed 3 (L3-VDT) or the 2.0L (LF-VE) models without significant electronic and fuel system modifications.
JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide
To ensure 100% compatibility and maintain your Mazda’s emissions and drivability, professional technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:
Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold and Exhaust Manifold. JDM versions often differ in vacuum port layouts and lack specific EGR bungs or O2 sensor locations required for North American emissions compliance.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive and will not interface with your Mazda’s chassis bulkheads or PCM.
Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors. Mazda electronics are sensitive; using your original “known-good” sensors prevents intermittent signal issues or Check Engine Light codes.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan. If the donor vehicle was a different chassis (like a Mazda Atenza or MPV), you must transfer your original USDM Mazda 3 Oil Pan and Pickup Tube to ensure proper subframe clearance.
Thermostat Housing: Swap your original USDM Water Outlet/Thermostat Housing to ensure all radiator and heater hoses align perfectly with your North American cooling system.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
