USDM-to-JDM Swap & Installation Guide

Important Swap Overview

While the JDM 3S-FE block and head are structurally identical to the USDM version, Japanese market engines occasionally have minor sensor, EGR, or wiring layout variations. Following this checklist ensures a seamless transition.

Step-by-Step Installation Checklist:

  1. Reuse Your USDM External Accessories:

    • Transfer your original USDM alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor over to the JDM engine to ensure proper bracket alignment and plug compatibility.

  2. Examine and Swap Wiring Harnesses:

    • It is heavily recommended to use your original USDM engine wiring harness. Check all sensor plugs (such as the coolant temperature sensor, oil pressure switch, and distributor plug) against the JDM long block; swap over any USDM sensors if plug styles differ.

  3. Check EGR and Emission Systems:

    • Depending on the specific prefecture origin in Japan, some JDM 3S-FE engines may have different EGR routing. Reuse your original USDM intake manifold or EGR pipe setup if necessary to avoid check-engine lights (CEL) and pass emissions inspection.

  4. Distributor and Ignition Check:

    • Verify whether your USDM igniter/distributor matches the JDM plug. If required, swap your original USDM distributor onto the JDM cylinder head to maintain proper communication with your stock ECU.

  5. Fresh Fluids and Maintenance:

    • Before dropping the engine into the bay, install a new timing belt, water pump, and valve cover gaskets as preventative maintenance while access is open. Fill with fresh oil and coolant upon completion.

What is included

You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.

Before you order

  • Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
  • Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
  • Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
  • Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
