JDM to USDM Installation & Technical Guide
To ensure 100% OBDII compliance and a seamless “plug-and-play” swap, professional technicians recommend these steps:
Sensor & Harness Transfer: You must transfer your original USDM Transmission Wiring Harness and Sensors (including the Input/Output Speed Sensors) to the JDM unit. JDM electrical plugs can sometimes vary in shape or pin-count; using your original electronics ensures the ECU communicates perfectly and prevents “Check Engine” lights.
Neutral Safety Switch: Reuse your original USDM Neutral Safety Switch (Range Sensor). This ensures your dashboard gear indicator and starting circuit function exactly as they did before.
Oil Cooler Flush: It is mandatory to flush your radiator’s transmission cooler lines. Debris from a failed transmission can hide in the lines and will destroy your new JDM unit if not properly cleared out.
Fluid Requirements: Use only high-quality Toyota ATF Type T-IV (or the equivalent specified on your dipstick). These U340E transmissions are sensitive to fluid quality; avoid generic “multi-vehicle” fluids for the best longevity.
What is included
You receive exactly what is pictured. Engines are supplied as a long block assembly with the components visible in the photos. Accessories such as the alternator, starter, intake manifold or sensors are included only where you can see them on the unit, so check the photographs before ordering and ask us if anything is unclear.
Before you order
- Confirm the engine code against your own vehicle, not just the model year.
- Japanese market units can differ from the US version in intake, loom and sensors.
- Replace the timing components, water pump and seals while the unit is out. It is cheap insurance on an engine this age.
- Keep your original accessories until the swap is finished and running.
