Used Japanese transmissions and gearboxes
A transmission is one of the few repairs where replacing the whole unit usually beats rebuilding it. A rebuild depends entirely on the skill of whoever did it and the quality of the kit they used. A low mileage import is a complete factory assembly that was working when it came out of the car.
We stock both manual and automatic units, pulled from the same Japanese market vehicles as our engines, and they are listed here with the model years they suit and whether they are front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive.
Getting the right unit
Transmissions are less forgiving than engines on fitment. Check all of this before ordering:
The transmission code, not just the car it came from.
Drive type. An all wheel drive unit will not go into a front wheel drive car.
Gear count and whether yours is a manual or automatic.
Final drive ratio if you care about how the car will drive afterwards.
The bellhousing bolt pattern against your engine.
Send us the VIN and we will confirm all of it against the unit on the shelf.
Fitting it properly
Replace the clutch kit and the rear main seal while a manual gearbox is out. On an automatic, fit a new filter, fresh fluid to the correct specification, and flush the cooler lines. Debris left in the cooler from a failed transmission will destroy the replacement, and that is not covered by any warranty, ours included.
Automatic units are also sensitive to fluid type. Use what the manufacturer specifies, not a universal fluid, and check the level the way the service manual says rather than the way the quick lube place does it.
